This debate examines whether space-based power is on the verge of becoming a viable industry or whether it remains a technically and economically implausible idea.

Space-based power is attracting attention. Companies are pursuing systems that would use space to help supply energy on Earth, from orbital mirrors that redirect sunlight to satellites that collect solar energy and beam power to the ground. Governments and investors are also exploring the technology. But whether any of these approaches can become a practical, competitive source of energy is still an open question.

Supporters argue that falling launch costs and advances in satellite technology could overcome technical and economic constraints. Critics counter that delivering meaningful amounts of energy from space would require enormous infrastructure and would struggle to compete with cheaper technologies that are available on Earth. So, will space-based power actually happen?

Peter Garretson argues that technological advances and growing investment are making space-based solar power increasingly viable. Launch costs are falling, satellite manufacturing has expanded, and companies are making progress on power beaming and other technologies needed to operate at scale. He points to the growing number of companies that are now pursuing space-based solar power, alongside growing interest from governments and the private sector. Garretson argues that this expanding investment and innovation will eventually overcome the remaining technical and economic barriers.

Michael Brown argues that space-based power faces fundamental physical, technological, and financial obstacles that make it unlikely to compete with energy sources on Earth. Launching and maintaining infrastructure in space remains expensive, while orbital mirrors lose much of their usefulness as reflected sunlight disperses before reaching the ground. Other concepts, such as generating electricity in space and beaming it to Earth, remain unproven at the distances and scale required. Brown argues that terrestrial solar, batteries, and power grids offer more practical and increasingly affordable ways to address the same challenges.

Dr. Peter Garretson is a senior fellow in defense studies at the American Foreign Policy Council, co-director of its Space Policy Initiative, and host of The Space Strategy Podcast. He previously served as the chief of the future technology branch for Air Force Strategic Planning and as a strategic planning engineer supporting the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate. He was the lead author of the 2008 Pentagon study on Space Solar Power, and organized the Space Solar Power team that won the interagency Diplomacy-Development-Defense “D3” competition in 2015, and catalyzed foundational work on power beaming at AFRLNRL, and DARPA. Michael Brown is an observational astronomer at Monash University who studies the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. Michael’s research team has found that the most massive galaxies grow relatively slowly, and that the relationship between stellar mass and dark matter mass evolves very little over billions of years. His 2014 atlas of galaxy spectral energy distributions is being used to improve estimates of cosmic distances, calibrate how rapidly galaxies form stars, and model the performance of NASA’s new James Webb Space Telescope.
