By the time of the Vietnam War, within-visual-range (WVR) engagements—better known as “dogfighting”—was waning as a form of aerial combat. Innovations in technology, notably improving radars and the development of increasingly long-range missiles, meant that a growing share of air-to-air combat took place beyond visual range (BVR).

New aircraft were designed around this reality. The F-4 Phantom II, arguably the United States’ premier fighter jet of the Vietnam era, was initially designed without a cannon. And in fights against the North Vietnamese Air Force, particularly its Soviet-supplied MiG-21 Fishbed fighter jets, the F-4 acquitted itself well despite its lack of close-range armaments.

Though the F-4 and the MiG-21 fulfilled essentially the same role—helping to explain why both aircraft were pitted against one another so frequently—the two jets represented contrasting design philosophies. While the F-4 was a large, twin-engine, radar-equipped interceptor designed around missiles and speed, the MiG-21 was a small, lightweight, single-engine fighter built for rapid interception. Encounters between the two helped usher in the era of missile-based air combat, and helped the US establish fighter doctrine that would persist for decades.

The F-4 and MiG-21 Were Two Very Different Fighters

Unlike earlier US and Soviet aircraft, which tended to closely resemble each other in the earliest days of jet flight, the F-4 and MiG-21 were immediately discernible at a distance. The F-4 was physically far larger and more powerful, with a much larger chassis, higher speeds, and a crew of two. The MiG-21 was smaller, but more nimble; its small size gave it a tiny radar signature and a much smaller visual profile, potentially allowing it to get the drop on unsuspecting American Phantoms. The raw difference in metrics between the two aircraft is shocking; the F-4 had more than twice the weight of the MiG-21, which allowed for significantly more fuel, radar, payload, and weapons capacity. 

In a BVR engagement, the F-4 held a massive advantage over the MiG-21. Its radar could support the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile, giving the F-4 a radar-guided engagement capability that the MiG-21 simply couldn’t match. The F-4 could supplement the Sparrow with heat-seeking AIM-9 Sidewinders, allowing it to destroy the Fishbed long before that aircraft entered shooting range. The MiG-21 had to rely primarily on shorter-range K-13/AA-2 Atoll infrared missiles—and, of course, its gun cannon.

Still, the Vietnam War demonstrated the gap between on-paper capability and real-world BVR warfare. Restrictive US rules of engagement often required F-4 pilots to confirm visual identification of enemy aircraft before firing—basically neutralizing much of the F-4’s BVR advantage. Moreover, the AIM-7 Sparrow was still a recent innovation at the start of the Vietnam War, with first introduction in 1959; its reliability was understandably checkered, and missile failure was relatively common, giving North Vietnamese aircraft a fighting chance.

Once within WVR conditions, the MiG-21 became far more dangerous. The jet’s tiny dimensions became a serious advantage over the F-4, as the MiG was difficult to see and track, highly maneuverable, and capable of excellent acceleration and climb rates. Still, North Vietnamese pilots understood their limitations relative to US airmen and typically avoided prolonged dogfights, preferring to execute fast hit-and-run attacks on American formations before skittering away. The F-4 had a speed and power advantage, so American pilots would attempt to avoid a turning battle, where the MiG-21 was considerably more adept. 

Why Didn’t the US Put Guns on the First F-4s?

The reasons for the lack of guns on early F-4s is a matter of continuing debate. The F-4’s designers believed missiles had made guns obsolete, so left the F-4 to rely solely on its missiles. Vietnam demonstrated the short-sightedness of this concept; when missiles failed, which was often, the F-4 was left defenseless. The Air Force eventually addressed the problem with the F-4E, adding an internal 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon. 

Ultimately, the F-4 scored dozens of MiG-21 kills during the Vietnam War, though the exact totals and losses vary depending on sources and criteria. Neither aircraft thoroughly dominated the other; circumstances and pilot skill and weapons reliability mattered enormously. But late-war American performance improved significantly as training, tactics, missiles, and the inclusion of a gun made victory more likely. Overall, the historical record reflects that the F-4 was the better jet, once training and tactics caught up with the conditions of the actual war.
